Savarkar was arrested on March 13, 1910 by the British police for plotting an armed revolt against the Minto-Morley Reforms of 1909. When the ship carrying him as a prisoner reached the Port of Marseilles on July 8, he escaped through a porthole and dived into the water, swimming a long distance to the shore. However, he was arrested later.
"While there may be huge public support for a death sentence for Kasab, we need to know that hanging one person is not the solution to terrorism. No one is born a criminal. What we need to look at is the circumstances of such a person like poverty, lack of education and increasingly a misinterpretation of the concept of religion," said Kadam.
The event, Bravery Day, was organised by Savarkar Smriti Pratishthan. Himani Savarkar, president of SSP and a Savarkar descendant, said to take the vision of Savarkar forward, SSP will organise self defense classes in Pune from August 1.
Suryakant Pathak, secretary of 1857 Shatkottar Suvarna Mahostav Samiti, who has pledged to sell one lakh copies of the book, Che Swatantrysamar (Freedom Battle of 1857), said he has already sold more than 97,000 copies and will try to take the book to every household.
Savarkar had written the book in Marathi during his stay at India House in London in 1907. The British government banned it before it could be published and destroyed the original manuscript.
