City colleges suspend work over Jalandhar principal’s murder

Ludhiana, January 7 The colleges in the city today suspended teaching work to as a gesture of solidarity with the teaching community in the state, which condemned the brutal killing of Rita Bawa, principal of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (KMV) at Jalandhar.

Most of the colleges in the city remained closed for the day. The district units of Punjab Government College Teachers Union, and Punjab and Chandigarh Colleges Teachers Union (PCCTU) also condemned the murder. Bawa was murdered at at her residence on the college campus yesterday.

The teachers said that it was unfortunate that a teacher and educationist was murdered with such brutality on the campus. They demanded that the those responsible for the murder of the principal, the two security guards and the cook should be brought to justice as soon as possible.

“It is sad that the incidents of violence in the educational campuses are increasing. While a girl student at Shantiniketan near Kolkata was killed in her hostel, the murder of Rita Bawa has shaken everybody. We demand that the police take necessary steps and arrest the culprits who perpetrated the act of violence,” said Jaipal Singh, professor at Government College and also the state president of PGCTU.

A condolence meet was held at SCD Government College for Boys and Government College for Women. Various other private colleges including GGN Khalsa College, Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, Arya College and other colleges declared mourning, and no teaching work took place in the colleges.

Principal Rita Bawa was murdered by unidentified persons yesterday at her residence in KMV campus, along with two security guards and the cook.
