This is for the third time that Dr Bedi has featured in the Limca Book of World Records. Previously working as the chairman of Cardiac Sciences at Sigma Hospital, Dr Bedi is joining as head of cardiac surgery at the Christian Medical College and Hospital on February 25.
His name had appeared for his achievement in conducting the first beating heart surgery (the same procedure as followed in Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's case) in the world in 2000. He got his second recognition in the book the same year when he transplanted a hand artery into the leg in order to prevent gangrene.
Talking about his latest recognition, he said, “This was a unique procedure in the sense that we took cathlab into the operation theatre and conducted the procedure with its help. Otherwise we would have had to operate upon the patient with much more difficulty. The cathlab made it possible to see into the vascular structure in the heart which would not have otherwise been possible with the naked eye.
“The woman patient we operated upon was very concerned about getting a scar on the breast so we thought of minimising the risks of causing a wider scar. Therefore, we came up with this technique wherein we used cathlab and conducted the surgery with very small cut,” narrated Dr Bedi.
Speaking to Newsline, he said new challenges provide opportunities to innovate newer techniques. “The patient in this case had straightway told us that she would not undergo surgery if the scar remained. So we invented Minimally Invasive Hybrid Technique using cathlab.”
