Ludhiana, January 11 Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today inaugurated the Amar Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Interstate Bus Terminal. Officials say the bus stand will result in hassle-free movement of 3,800 buses catering to 1.25 lakh passengers every day. The new bus stand has a total area of 11.8 acres, out of which 9,375 square meters have been covered.

Built at an estimate cost of Rs 13.80 crore by MSK Projects, a Baroda-based company, it has many modern facilities. There are separate dormitories for men and women, a big canteen, potable drinking water supplied by water purifiers and water coolers, 30 ticket counters to cater to 43 bus counters in the main terminal for interstate buses and 16 counters in the local terminaland idle or overnight parking facility for 77 buses.

Unlike the old bus terminal, the new one has enough space for parking of two-wheelers, three wheelers, rickshaws, cars and cycles. In case of power failure, there is also provision of generators as a back up facility. The officials are quick to point out that the bus stand has 60 urinal points equipped with mirrors, wash basins, proper illumination levels, exhaust fans etc.

Elevators have been provided for physically challenged. Separate toilets have been made for them with side rails along with western seats. Wheel chairs have also been provided.

Many value added services like digital display clocks, public address system, directional boards, neon signboards have also been displayed at the new site.

The bus terminal has separate entry and exit for passengers. There is computerised collection system for the collection of adda fees.

The operation and maintenance of the bus terminal will be monitored by the maintenance board under the chairmanship of Director State Transport with deputy commissioner and the Concessionaire as members.

The MSK company signed the agreement of ten years, on August 16, 2005, with government of Punjab on BOT basis (built, operate and transfer basis). The bus terminal will be transferred to the Punjab government on May 17, 2016.

The plinth level of terminal has been sufficiently raised to avoid flooding.

Although it has been designed to cater to heaviest of rains with state of the art rainwater harvesting system yet at some places problem of water logging was seen.

Hardeep Singh Chief Executive Office of MSK Company said, “We are here to rectify the problems and maintain bus terminal. This fault will be rectified soon.”

Badal announced a grant of Rs10 lakh for the maintenance and preservation of the native house of martyr Sukhdev that would be developed into a memorial. He honoured family the family members of the marty.

Speaking on the occasion, Transport minister Master Mohan Lal said the Transport department had chalked out an ambitious programme to modernise and upgrade the 32 bus stands in the state on the Built, Operate and Transfer basis.

He said world-class bus stand at Anandpur Sahib will be developed on priority basis.

The Transport minister said the state government would soon introduce 200 AC buses at a normal fair to enable the common man to travel in AC bus.

He said that soon four major cities of Punjab including Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Mohali would have taxi service. The taxi service will also be made available on phone.
