Mumbai A slight incursion of northerly winds at the start of this week has brought some respite from the unusually sweltering weather this January. After seeing a high of 37 degree Celsius on Saturday, the mercury dropped considerably this week, hovering around 32 degree.

On Tuesday, Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 30 degree while Santacruz recorded 31.8 degree Celsius. A dip was recorded in the minimum temperatures too — at 20.3 degree and 18.2 degree Celsius respectively on Tuesday. This is two degree above the 16 degree Celsius normal temperature predicted for January. Weather officials said that the drop in temperature is due to the passage of northerlies in the region.

K Sathi Devi, director of the India Meteorology Department (IMD) said, “The wind circulation and the impact of the Western Disturbances (WD) in North India contribute to winter in the western region. Usually, humidity rises when WD approaches and a cold wave takes over when it passes. This year, however, the movement of WD has been continuous so far and there has been no gap to sustain the northerlies across the country. That’s why the cold wave has been absent.” She explained that a cold wave needs some time between two WDs to take over.

IMD officials forecast that while slight fall in temperatures will continue, a drastic change in the current weather situation in the city is improbable, for at least the next 48 hours. As per weather forecast the maximum and minimum temperature will be around 32 and 19 degree Celsius.
