Mumbai, February 6 Municipal school buildings in the city may be mostly dilapidated structures, with peeling paint and a complete lack of basic facilities, but plans are now afoot to give several hundreds of these buildings a complete makeover, managed professionally by qualified architects. According to Joint Municipal Commissioner (education) SS Shinde, 550 civic school buildings are to be repaired in an exercise including a uniform colour code for them, signages and upgradation of existing facilities.

“Earlier, we would appoint an architect and a structural engineer who would look at the repair work of the buildings. Projects would very often get delayed because both would have to coordinate work. But now we have decided to appoint a Project Management Consultant (PMC) who will supervise every stage of the renovation work of the school buildings,” said Shinde. The BMC on Wednesday invited Expressions of Interest from architects for the consultancy contract.

According to Shinde, the consultant would need to visit the schools and study the building structures and then in consultation with school authorities prepare plans for renovation. Everything from tender documentation to preparing the estimates, from evaluation of plans to the contract award process, would be handled by the PMC.

“We do not mind high costs but we want to ensure that the repair work carried out is long lasting. The buildings should look attractive and should look good aesthetically,” Shinde said.

The uniform colour code has not been decided as yet but according to Shinde, would depend on the architecture of the buildings.

A total of Rs 24.47 crore has been proposed for the work of civil, furniture and electrical repairs. A provision of Rs 5 crore for painting school buildings and Rs 2. 50 crore for improved signages has been proposed in the budget estimates of 2008-9.
