“We are taking all precautions in the run-up to the Republic Day celebrations,” a senior police officer said.
Early today, the Uttar Pradesh ATS killed two suspected Pakistani militants in Noida in an encounter while they were trying to enter Delhi.
The police have stepped up security measures saying they don’t want to take “any chances” ahead of Monday’s celebrations. “After the Mumbai attacks, we are not taking any chances. There are inputs (about possible strikes). We are making tight arrangements for the event,” a senior police officer said.
Security has been stepped up at important public places and vital installations, including Delhi Metro stations, railway stations, bus terminals and crowded marketplaces.
Electronic surveillance will also be increased, the officer said. Extra security cover has been extended to all religious places in the Capital, he said.
Checkings at borders and night patrolling has also been intensified. Barricades have been put up at various crossings and sniffer dogs have been deployed at railway stations, the officer said.
