“After the blasts in Ahmedabad, we had circulated a lot of notices advising mall owners about security. While undoubtedly there has been upgradation of security at these places, I feel that a lot more needs to be done,” Chakrabarti told mediapersons here on Saturday. “While there is no specific information that Kolkata is facing a terrorist threat our intelligence reports say that all cities are in the radar hence security needs to be upgraded,” he added.
Citing that malls have been made soft targets by terrorists across the world, including Israel which has faced 10 such attacks on malls, Chakrabarti said that it is important to make it difficult for terrorists to attack these places.
Apart from the police, he said it was also the job of the malls and multiplexes to install their own security system. He added that security at these places must be three-fold — the first beginning from the moment a vehicle enters the premises where it is important to check it with gadgets like under-carriage mirror and keep a record of all the cars entering the area. The second layer, he emphasised, starts when pedestrians enter the premises and third layer of security must be installed inside malls where it is important to keep an eye on visitors’ movements.
