The shopping list has three letter-bomb detectors, 125 bulletproof helmets, 10 deep search metal detectors, 90 bulletproof jackets of various kinds, a bomb box, five baggage x-ray scanners, two hook and line sets and two non-linear junction detectors, among other things.
“We plan to acquire all the equipment by the end of March at a cost of around Rs 5 crore,” said Singh.
He said the cops plan to have two sets of advanced equipment for the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS). “When one set is being used to detect any bomb, the other set would be kept on standby.”
“After the modernization, even if we get three bomb threats at a time, we can handle them simultaneously,” claimed Singh.
“The city police had received around Rs 17.62 crore for modernising the police force before the Commonwealth Youth Games, of which Rs 11 crore was spent before the Games. The remaining is being spent now,” said DCP Ravindra Sengaonkar. “During the CYG, we acquired 250 vehicles and 250 motorcycles. We bought advanced equipment. Our officers were given anti-sabotage training. We also trained 919 officers in computer skills to handle cyber crime,” said Singh.
Asked what more equipment the police would need, Singh said, “Pune is a growing city and requires at least four vehicles for each police station as Mumbai has. At present there are two to three vehicles per police station.”
