“Some foreign representatives of different companies are visiting me today to demonstrate the effectiveness and features of their products. We were planning to procure new weapons, vehicles following the 26/11 attacks. We will see whether any of their products suit our requirements,” said Gafoor.
According to the police, the representatives of the foreign companies are in the city to display their equipment at an expo at the Word Trade Centre in Cuffe Parade. They had invited Gafoor to visit the expo to see the equipment on display. But later they held a separate demonstration for him as he was unable to attend the expo.
“They are going to show me bullet proof vests, night vision binoculars and new weapons amongst other products. We have formed a four member committee of officers who will assess equipment before we procure them,” said Gafoor.
The committee is led by Gafoor and other memebers are Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration) B D More, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Barve and Additional Commissioner of Police (Protection and Security) Vinay Kargaonkar.
The Mumbai Police have already said that it was planning to procure Level IV bullet proof vests which can withstand a bullet of an AK-47 assault rifle from a distance of 10 metres. They are planning to procure MP-9 sub machine guns, night vision binoculars, armoured jeeps and amphibian vehicles also.
“Amphibian vehicles are required as Mumbai is an island city. There are several festivals which take place on the beach fronts,” said Gafoor.
