Vadodara Folk artists thronged the city to celebrate the two-day Vadodara Day Festival ‘09. An array of unique instruments and singing styles were on display on the first day of the event on Sunday.

The Bauls from West Bengal opened the programme with their devotional music, which rekindled the Sufi spirit of religious unity at the Sayaji Baug Amphitheatre on Sunday evening.

The festival has been organised to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the coronation of Maharaja Sir Sayaji Rao III.

French artists from Corsica thrilled many with a spectacle of light and sound, as they rendered a fire dance coupled with a recital of a new instrument called Hang. “We are thrilled to see such a big attendance,” said French artist Loic Robreteau.

Next was the turn of Brahmaputra Boyz from Assam to entertain the 1,000-strong crowd with a high-voltage Bihu performance.

A lively backdrop of animated figures projected on a building only added charm to it.

The students of Maya Academy of Animation and Cinematics (MAAC) and city-based artist, Goutam Ghosh, designed the projection part of the show.

Along with the show, an awareness drive to educate the people about traffic safety was also taken up in the programme that is jointly hosted by Vadodara Initiative and The Plantation, a group of independent artists from the city.

“On the last day, we have a Mohiniattam performance by students of Navrachna School and a stand-up comedy act by a local artist,” said a member of Vadodara Initiative.

There was also a harmonica recital by Ajitsinh Gaekwad and another folk performance by English folk singer Bunny Bhargava and Boundless Spirit.
