City twins to rack brains at International Maths Olympiad

Three Pune kids, including twins Anand and Akshay Degwekar along with Gaurav Patil will be representing India at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO-2010) to be held at Astana, Kazakhstan, from July 2 -14.

“Anand and Akshay are twins and it is the frst time that a pair of twins has bee selected to participate in the IMO at the same time. The trio were trained at Bhaskaracharya Pratishthan for three years. " Gaurav, a student of Modern College also attended the IMO last year and bagged a bronze medal, while Akshay and Anand are students of Jog Junior College,” said Aditi Phadke of Bhaskaracharya Pratishthan.

Akashnil Dutta, Ronno Das and Satyaki Mukherjee from West Bengal are the other three members in the team, according to a press note from Bhaskaracharya Pratishthan, that has been coaching the Pune students for the Olympiad.

A one month training camp has been organised at the Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education in Mumbai from 29th April to 27th May 2010, based on which the six students were selected to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The Indian team will be lead by Prof B J Venkatachala of the Mathematical Olympiad Cell, HBCSE, TIFR, Bangalore, while Dr Joseph Amal Nathan from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai will be the deputy leader of the team. Prof M B Rege from North-Eastern University will accompany the team as observer.
