Ahmedabad With the election dates drawing near, it is not just political parties which are in the midst of hectic activity, the city youth are also set to make a statement on the electoral process by the way of short ‘Vox Pop’ films.

Open Space, an Ahmedabad-based organization that uses various forms of communication like literature, cinema, theatre, music, publications and Internet to reach out to citizens and encourage them to engage in social justice and development issues, has come up with the idea of organising a film-based event for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

About 10 participants who have registered for this event under the aegis of Open Space will be moving in different areas of the city like Satellite, Drive-in, Vastrapur, Paldi, Juhapura, Maninagar, Ramrahim Nagar to get a perspective on what the citizens think about the electoral process.

‘Vox Pop’ sessions will be filmed on questions related to elections. The participants will be covering views of citizens related to democracy, political power and the importance of voting.

Raheel Dhattiwala, the co-ordinator of the event, told Newsline: “The objective behind the event is to generate a spontaneous response about political issues among the people of Ahmedabad. We are looking forward to bring forth the perspective of people from all the areas of the city, especially from the slum and remote areas.”

The participants for the event come from diverse backgrounds including professionals, college-going youth and businessmen. The participants will learn techniques of camera handling and interviewing people about relevant issues during the course of making the film.

Deepa Nair and Komal Shah, the participants for the event and also first year students from the Centre for Development Communication (CDC) while talking to Newsline, said, “Till now, the response we have got from the public is amazing and in the process we are also learning views of a cross-section of people.”

Open Space is planning to come up with two such films that will be screened in April.
