New Delhi The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) now wants to create parking lots in the residential areas. The corporation plans to create one parking of at least 500 cars in all the 272 municipal wards.

Besides residential, the MCD will also create 251 parkings in commercial areas. Most of these sites are already being run as illegal parkings, by the parking mafia. The corporation is in the process of authorising these unauthorised parking sites.

The MCD, which have to take No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Traffic Police before creating a parking spot, is in a fix as the Traffic Police does not respond to their requests. “We have written to the Traffic Police on several occasions. But the traffic police never respond to the MCD. And after the MCD awards the parking contract the traffic police raise objections and tow away the cars parked in the authorised parking,” said MCD’s Additional Deputy Commissioner of Residential Parking Cell Amiya Chandra. “We cannot cancel the parking contract for one year after it is awarded,” he added. There are about 39 parking sites that are yet to receive NOC from the traffic police.

The MCD has now written to the Environmental Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) in this regard.

“The Traffic Police, did not respond to the MCD, but has responded to the EPCA. The EPCA has asked the traffic police to submit its comment on the next meeting that is due next month,” added Chandra.
