New Delhi After approving plans for revamping the Jama Masjid area, the MCD is now all set to take the project forward and extend it to Ferozeshah Kotla and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. The proposal, which will be tabled in the Standing Committee meeting tomorrow, will entail discussion on the signing of an MoU with INTACH, close on the heels of another MoU that was signed between the heritage body and Delhi Government.

The corporation has been working on the proposal made by INTACH for developing heritage roads that fall under MCD jurisdiction. The new MoU will involve redevelopment of Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Ferozeshah Kotla and the road between Delhi Gate and Daryagunj. The MCD plans to develop all heritage and prominent sites on this stretch.

INTACH plans to develop a Heritage Road corridor starting from Coronation Park in the north to Qutub Minar in South Delhi. Ferozeshah Kotla, Khooni Darwaza and the Delhi Gate are important historical sites on this stretch. The famous Dolls Museum and Shaheed Park are other prominent locations, all these sites being under the MCD jurisdiction in Delhi.

The MCD already plans to build a multi-level underground parking at the Shaheed Park. In its proposal, INTACH has proposed development of an alternate parking site on the open space in front of Manak Bhawan. “We want to make the Dolls Museum more accessible. A parking lot at Manak Bhawan will reduce the vehicle load at the Press Enclave. It will also make the Dolls Museum more popular,” said A G K Menon, convener of the Delhi Chapter of INTACH.

The MCD also plans to do extensive landscaping of the area. Apart from the underground parking, Shaheed Park will be developed to provide a clear view of the Ferozeshah Kotla Fort.

“Besides landscaping and levelling the entire area, we will design uniform street furniture, signages for the heritage monuments on the route and will also ensure there is ample parking space available for all the sites. We will also make sure these sites gain more prominence and visibility,” added Menon.

The MCD is already started working on the Jama Masjid redevelopment plan. Apart from developing the monument, the MCD has an extensive road plan in place for all roads approaching the Masjid and the Red Fort.

“We have already been working on the Jama Masjid redevelopment plan. The MCD is also working to create a uniform signage for the city. The INTACH proposal can be treated as an extension to the MCD’s plan,” said an MCD official. The corporation hopes the MOU will be signed in the next couple of months after the proposal gets approval from the MCD Standing Committee and the House.
