Mumbai Two months after 16 policemen and two NSG commandoes were killed, among scores of others by 10 terrorists on 26/11, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has agreed to set up monuments to honour all the dead.

Another Shahid Smarak (martyr’s memorial) will be set up in Worli, near the residence of the late assistant sub inspector Tukaram Omble who fell prey to bullets from the AK-47 of Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone arrested terrorist.

The decision in this regard was taken at the group leaders’ meeting on Monday. The proposal was moved by the ruling saffron combine, Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena, at the meeting. A total of 174 people were killed and another 190 injured in the attacks.

The BJP’s youth wing had moved a proposal to construct a memorial to honour all the dead in the terror attack. “The memory of all the dead: civilians, police officials and NSG commandoes, should remain in the minds of Mumbaikars for ever. The memorial will help in keeping the flame of sacrifice alive,” it said.

BJP group leader Bhalchandra Shirsat said the civic body can on its own construct the memorial or tell the party to do so. “We are awaiting the response now and depending on it, either the BMC or BJP will look for the site and construct the memorial,” he said.

The proposed Shahid Tukaram Omble chowk near police camp, Worli, will also house the memorial. “Since Omble’s residence is in the area, a memorial to honour all the NSG and police officials will be apt,” said Worli corporator Madhukar Dalvi. “Shahid Police Smarak Samiti has expressed willingness to construct the memorial,” he said.

The Sena-led BMC has also recommended other proposals to honour the martyrs, which include the naming of a flyover after Vijay Salaskar and two parks in the names of Salaskar and ATS chief Hemant Karkare. The Civic Tree Authority has also proposed planting rare trees as a memorial to the slain cops and NSG commandoes.

Memorials by richard on 14 Jan 2009

It is high time for the BMC to build Brihan Memorials for the sake of those who have made this city what it is today. Among the first to be honoured like this should be Members of Thackeray family. As the government has the plan to build a Brihan memorial to honour The Chhatrapati, the BMC should build another memorial like that near that memorial comprising of statues of Bal, Raj and Udhav. It is because of them Bombay became Mumbai. Many have become honourable ministers, MPs, MLAs and councilors because of them. Marathi has replaced English because of them. Their literature of hatred is leading many Maharashtrian youngsters to dream of becoming Respectable public figures just by throwing stones at others. No one could have done it but Thackarays have done it. They really need a monument, not those who die for this country silently, unsung.
