Civic body to use creative means to teach Maths to school students

Mumbai, January 11 Coming up with new means of teaching mathematics, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will adopt creative means including abacus, tangram puzzle, napier bones and Math Ala Carte to improve mathematical abilities of civic school students. The civic body will spend Rs 8 lakh to purchase coloured kits which will be used in schools for students studying in standard I to VI.

The standing committee on Wednesday approved the proposal for purchasing mathematics kits. As a pilot project, 90 sets of arithmetic, number, geometry, measuring sections and six volumes of books will be purchased. Concept of time and calendar and fraction models will be taught with the help of this.

“Learning disabilities exist among students in various subjects and accordingly we had made provision for setting language laboratories and purchased kits last year,” said Joint Municipal Commissioner, SS Shinde. According to the civic officials English and Mathematics are the two areas where students in municipal schools face problems.

Global learning systems, which has created different types educational kits, will be supplying it to the BMC. The civic administration will purchase abacus, napier bones, abacus flash cards, math slate, analog clock, parent/teacher guide, math ala carte including a compilation of interesting facts and formulae of primary maths and biographies of great mathematicians.

Shinde said that all around the world there are various methods used to teach mathematics which are different from conventional methods. “Experts have claimed that the creative mathematics kits are user friendly and students will enjoy learning. We will take response from students and teachers and accordingly take decision on continuing the new method and whether to purchase more such kits,” he said adding the kits are only for experimental basis now. After evaluating the response, the civic administration will also see whether to re-design the kits to adopt the nature of civic schools.
