Surat Two new stretches-Sachin to Godhan and Godhan to Icchapur-to be developed under the initiative

The ring road project of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is all set to be extended to areas which have recently come under the purview of the civic body.

The Ring Road is expected to be widened to cover newer areas, following a Rs 1,000-crore MoU signed between SMC and IL & FS Transportation Co. — a Mumbai based transportation company.

Two new stretches-Sachin to Godhan and Godhan to Icchapur-will be developed under the initiative.

Mukand Sapre from IL & FS said: “This project is successfully underway in Surat and we plan to widen it further. The stretch from Sachin to Godhan will be developed first, while the Godhan to Icchapur stretch will be completed later. Areas that fall beyond Icchapur will come under NH 8A and thus will be developed under the National Highway projects.”

Surat Municipal Commissioner S Aparna said: “This is an outer ring road development project that falls partly under the SMC and partly under the Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA).”

According to Sapre, Godhan is a barren land and the corporation plans to develop it with basic infrastructure facilities.

The Ring Road will help Icchapur, a major industrial area in Surat, to manage traffic. The project plans to widen the Ring Road and also develop internal roads near that area.

Sapre added: “The project is expected to start shortly as the land has already been acquired. We have planned the development of the project.”

IL & FS Transportation Co. already has major highways in Gujarat to its credit, including the Ahmedabad-Mehsana Highway, the Vadodara-Halol Highway and the Rajkot-Jetpur Highway.
