It was the second murder in the city in three days.

The murdered peon, Keshav Ramakant Pande (25), was a resident of Raviwar Peth. He had been reported missing since Sunday morning.

Police sources said the injury marks on the body reveal that Pande had been attacked repeatedly with one or more sharp weapons. The police have seized one such weapon, which they believe had been used to kill Pande.

The police are still trying to establish the motive behind the murder. A murder case has been registered against unknown persons at the Vishrambaug police station.

A fruit vendor spotted Pande’s body around 9.30 am and informed the police. A police team, led by senior inspector C D Jadhav reached the spot.

Pande’s identity was established when the police searched his pockets and found some papers. Jadhav said that Pande had been attacked with sharp weapons on the head and the wrist.

Senior officers including Deputy Commissioner (zone I) Raghunath Khaire, assistant commissioner (crime) Sangramsinh Nishandar visited the spot where the body was found.

Police said that Pande was the son of an autorickshaw driver. He is said to have been an alcoholic. Investigations were on to ascertain if he had an enmity with someone.
