Though the delegates felt happy visiting the country, they claimed the experience to be different after the Mumbai terror attacks as they were being made to suffer for an heinous act committed by a few.
The guest of honour for the occasion was Advocate General of Punjab Justice
H S Mattewal. Also present on the occasion were Dean, Law Faculty, G K Chatrath and Professor R C Sobti, Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University.
The delegation participated in a discussion on the ways and means to improve peace ties between the two nations and was of the view that people from both the nations should not get involved in the political strategies of the governments but rather take a step on their own to promote peace.
Sharing their experiences, Saeeda Diep, a delegate from Pakistan, said: “We are happy to be here and wish that all barriers between both the nations are done away with. We do not wish our children to have the same memories as our ancestors do. It is high time that the civil society in both nations understand the importance of peace.”
A few guests also got nostalgic while speaking and narrated the experiences of their families during Partition. Qamar Hayat, another delegate from Pakistan, said: “I am very happy to be here and our appeal to both the nations is that they should get over the issues like terrorism and promote peace. If both the nations get united, it would be very difficult for any foreign country to surpass them.”
PUTA President Professor Ronki Ram compered the entire programme while Professor Sobti said only a physical barrier exists between the two nations and if people are determined even that can be removed. Justice Mattewal also shared his experiences with the gathering.
