Ludhiana The December 5 police-versus-Panthic bodies clash has not only helped a number of leaders stage a comeback, but has also brought together radical Sikh bodies on a common platform. On several occasions following the clash, Bhai Ranjit, former Akal Takht jathedar who shot dead Nirankari head Gurbachan Singh, has been all praise for SAD(A) leader Simarnjeet Singh Mann, while Damdami Taksal head Bhai Mokham Singh has sung paeans to Bhai Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwala.

Bhai Ranjit says, “History has given us a one more chance to unite. The SGPC elections will be our test. We will back only those candidates who do not shift to the Badal clan once they win.”

He says the SAD (Badal) is weakening which, he says, is evident from the Vidhan Sabha elections where the SAD-BJP alliance was restricted to 46 seats. “This shows that people know that Parkash Singh Badal is double-faced,” he adds.

R P Singh, spokesperson of the Akhand Keertani Jatha, adds, “We are in talks with all the Panthic leaders and asking them whether they stand by the commitment that they made at the bhog of Darshan Singh (the man who dies in police firing in Ludhiana). We have talked to Bhai Jasbir Singh Rode and Simranjeet Singh Mann, who have promised us support.”

On the issue of Khalistan, R P Singh says, “Whether we can have a separate state or ask for more powers for Punjab is what needs to be figured out.”

Meanwhile, Panthic leaders met the five persons injured in the clash who are undergoing treatment at the local CMCH. They gave Rs 1 lakh to the patient who is still critical and Rs 50,000 each to others.

Whether Shiromani Akali Dal organized on December 14, 1920 at Sri Akal Takhat Sahib has ever decided to launch Gurdwaras Reform Movement again, to play the important role in the social, political and religious life of the Sikhs as well as of the Punjabis or has it been abandoned?
