Chandigarh Was it rice or wheat? This was the question that haunted mostof the Class X students who appeared in the social science paper, while coming out of the examination hall today. The black and white graphic, comprising four marks, was unclear and made identification difficult, thus making it more difficult to answer the question.

The question demanded that students identify the crop in the graphic and answer questions. While most of the students said the graphic ‘looked’ like wheat and answered the questions accordingly, it later turned out to be a rice crop.

“The picture was blurred, but it looked like wheat. So, I wrote my answers accordingly,” said Aakriti, a student.

“The picture was blurred. Though confusion persisted, it appeared like wheat and I answered accordingly,” said a government school student.

The whole picture became clear after some principals enquired about the question from the CBSE office, and they were told that it was a rice crop. Parents as well as students now worried about the weightage attached to the question.

“In board examinations, even one mark is very important and the said question was for four marks. The board should have been extra careful about printing. Now that damage has been done, the board should do something in this regard like giving grace marks to students,” said a parent.

Dr Rakesh Sachdeva, principal, DAV Model School, Sector 15, said: “The picture was not clear and students were confused. Since it is an important issue, we have decided to send a representation to the CBSE to

come up with a solution and are expecting they will take the decision in favour of students.”

The students, meanwhile, said the question paper was balanced though lengthy. Nearly 15,000 students from across the tricity appeared for the examination at 48 centres.

Social Exam by Dakshita on 27 Mar 2009

Unfortunately, thing is, that people who got the answer right are fighting with those who didnt. get a life, people! the board wont knows what it has to do! it is sad that many people messed it up, but, arguing is of no use. and the ones, who it right, do you guys think youre the only ones who studied hard for the social exam? and the ones who got it wrong, dont be hard on the ones who got it right, either. some of the posts are utterly obnoxious, some of you should seriously mind your language. and some others, improve your language and spellings first before arguning. you cannot say the picture was clear. very truly, it wasnt printed properly. and nothing of this sort was mentioned in the sample papers of 2009 in the cbse site. that was unfortunate. anyways, everything happens for a good reason, so chill you guys and all the best for science and practical theory.cheers.

SOCIAL SCIENCE by SURAJ on 27 Mar 2009

AFTER PREPARING FOR EXAMS FOR FULL 1 YEAR, STUDENTS GET CONFUSED WHILE SEEING THE PICTURE OF "RICE" OR "WHEAT" OR "SUGARCANE".I THINK CBSE KNOWS BETTER ABOUT THE ANSWER BUT IT MAY GIVE HUGE LOSS TO THE STUDENTS.IF CBSE WILL MAKE THIS TYPE OF MISTAKES THEN THERE WILL BE NO DIFFERENCE B/W THE CBSE AND THE STATE BOARDS.CBSE HAS CLEAR THEIR MISTAKE AND GIVE GRCE OF 4 MARKS TO THE STUDENTS.

the wretched crop!!! by s vishal on 24 Mar 2009

I badly want those four cherished marks as i may lose my centum because of that particular question.....i hope the management would be fulfil the favour of the students...

THE QUESTION OF IDENTIFICATION OF CROP (UNFORTUNATELY RICE !!!) WAS A NIGHTMARE FOR ME .THE PIC WAS BLURRED . IN CBSE WALO KI WAAT LAGA DENI CHAHEYE

social paper 2009 by mahantesh on 21 Mar 2009

marks should be given to the question.its really frustating !we got confused it seems its was wheat but its rice.its total negligence of board .how can they release a paper with that blured picture?it should be the responsibity of in charge officials to clarify it before realising.

misleading paper by vaishali on 21 Mar 2009

Please we don't want to loose our 4 marks its very precious for us.

cbse printing the worst!!!! by umashankar on 18 Mar 2009

The printing of the cbse social studies question paper was really worst. Especially the picture part of it was very blured. It is the duty of the cbse to reduce students tension, they should reward4 marks to all the students.

blurred image should be abonus by mokshak gautam on 18 Mar 2009

CBSE should make it as a bonus question {rice ,wheat ,sugarcane}

Social Science by Shishir on 20 Mar 2009

The question as well as the picture of crop was from the text book of NCERT so question of bonus marks doesn't arise

social science by abc on 16 Mar 2009

we are students.we are not farmers or labourers who have the knowledge about shapes of the crops.so cbse should provide us with grace marks for this question.

social science by ali javed on 16 Mar 2009

most of my fellow classmtes were driven by the feeling that the picture was of sugarcane plant and so they answered accordingly. i think the picture was not clear so c.b.s.e should be lineant in that question and give marks to all for wheat, rice and sugarcane.

bewildered !!! by a dejected student on 16 Mar 2009

there was nothing wrong with the imzge of the crop.anyone who had gont thru the text buk can easily identify it as rice.there should atleast be a difference between those who do and do not read textbooks

incorrect question by arun on 15 Mar 2009

cbse should have given some hints related to that questionlike identify the crop which is the staple food for the majority of indian?the picture looks like maize also

BASELESS EXCUSES FOR D MISTAKE COMMITTED by mahak on 14 Mar 2009

how can smeone say dat the picture was blurred or smthing!!..??..these are all lame xcuses daht the people are giving who got the question wrong..to put pressure on cbse.!do u guys thnk daht the person who has set up the paper was out of his senses or smthing....d picture is easily identifiable..nd i bet if u gys (those who got it wrong) would have GONE THROUGH THE BOOK THOROUGHLY, then u would hav definitely got it right..!!..and yeah iT iS ImPoRtAnT 2 PuT eVrYtHiNg iNto yOuR ToP fLoOr as long as you crave to get a 100!!and it wud b a DISGRACE on cbse's part if they gv grace marx for this question...because those who had studied evrythng and gav the crrect answer R NOT FOOLS..!!...nd dey demand justice!!

A request! by A Concerned Student on 14 Mar 2009

it is not injustice to the ones who study. only those who either cheated or mugged up everything would have got it right! an average student would not be able to tell wether the crop in the picture was rice of wheat or sugarcane. rice is a grainy crop. in the picture everything looked grainy because of the bad print. so most students could not make out if it was grainy because it is rice or because it was a bad quality picture. any child who wrote rice or sugarcane should be given grace marks. if the picture was coloured it would have been easier to recognise the crop. basically learning something is not mugging up the book. it is understanding and remembering. this belief is not very well judged by schools. children who get good marks by mugging up are considered as the best but those who understand everything are considered as average students. why is it so? actual studies is development of the brain !CBSE IS REQUESTED BY 95% OF THE STUDENTS WHO DID'NT WRITE RICE TO BE GIVEN MARKS

Injustice to the ones who study by Divyanshi on 14 Mar 2009

The decision should be taken in favour of the students who did study the text books carefully ... and every year CBSE gives a picture based question... and the board paper is made by professionals.... so unnecessarily creating an issue is being partial and unjust to those who did write the answer correct.. and the picture if matched with the one given in textbook is clearly "RICE"... and if the paper contained a question for above average students then others should understand that "they wrote correct because they studied"...

social sciences paper class x 2009 by rajesh sharma on 12 Mar 2009

the graphic was definitely blurred.every question in an exam paper should be clearly legible to the students and they should not be penalised for no fault of theirs.the exam authority should take notice of this fact and take appropriate steps to compensate students.

mistake of the printing commitee of cbse by shrey on 12 Mar 2009

the picture given was too blurred to identify.one cannot identify it unless he had seen the picture.i got it right but surely it looked like wheat.too bad print by cbse.shame..shame..
