Hall 1 is the pick of the lot, with Penguin and Rupa ruling the roost. Pick up the best classics from Dickens to Jerome K. Jerome at Rs 75 in pretty green jackets. Hold your breath as you look up Faber and Faber titles on display. Mario Vargas Llosa’s latest, The Bad Girl, nestles above Jan Morris and DBC Pierre. And if you look to your left, the Puffin children’s corner looks very inviting, even if you’re all grown up and cynical.
The Rupa stall looks like a bakery on Christmas Eve. Packed with browsers and buyers alike, their books are reasonably priced and don’t be too surprised if you find a copy of a rare book. And if you can take some time out on Tuesday, K Natwar Singh will release Ankush Saikia’s Jet City Woman at 4 pm.
Don’t miss the Rave Media stall. This is one stall that has already become the highlight of the fair this year. Located in Hall 1, this stall is every book lover’s dream. With the best and eclectic collection of fiction, music books, play and film scripts, books on motorcycles and automobiles, this is a good place to blow your money.
If you’re into comic books and the like, carry obnoxious amounts of money or a loaded card. The real test is to walk past the boxed collection of all of Calvin and Hobbes and MAD magazine’s greatest artists. If you don’t buy them, it will be difficult to survive the rest of the evening.
Moving on to Hall 2, it is a pleasure to visit the HarperCollins stall. So far, it is the neatest looking stall and the titles are impeccably categorised and arranged. Don’t forget to check out titles by Harper international; pick up My Mistress’s Sparrow is Dead, a beautiful collection of great love stories from Chekhov to Munro. They’ve also released Kari, a graphic novel by Amruta Patil.
Help yourself to Hall 10, where all the self-help book publishers are keeping each other company. But in the midst of that is Scholastic’s colourful stall with a very attractive collection of many children’s titles by Indian authors, along with stalwarts like Roddy Doyle.
Once you’re done going through these stalls, watch this space for more Book Fair brouhaha.
