Mumbai, January 4 A month and a half after it deployed clean-up marshals to slap fines on people littering and causing nuisance in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has admitted of not getting adequate response. More than 5,000 people have been fined and around Rs 19 lakh have been collected as fine so far.

Addressing a press conference, Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) R A Rajiv said, “The BMC has not received the kind of response that was expected in the beginning.” The civic body had appointed guards from four security agencies who were given ward-wise responsibilities of fining people who violate cleanliness and sanitation bylaws. When asked if the drive had gathered steam, Rajiv said, “It was yet to gain momentum.”

Rajiv said a half-day workshop would be conducted on Saturday for all clean-up marshalls and ward officers. “I will review the situation at the wards and accordingly steps will be taken to improve the situation,” he said.
