Close to 3 lakh people in state HIV/AIDS affected

Gandhinagar, February 29 The number of new HIV-cases in Gujarat has swelled by over 50 percent between 2006 and 2007, with the addition of 18,774 new full-blown AIDS cases in the state.

According to the 2006 figures of National Aids Control Society (NACO) 0.43 per cent of state’s population consisted of People Living with HIV or AIDS (PLHA).

According to the new figures, the number of people in Gujarat afflicted with the virus is now 0.5 per cent or close to three lakhs.

Health Minister Jainarayan Vyas said this in the Assembly in reply to a question by Kathlal Congress MLA Gautam Jhala, who wanted to know the district wise figure of new HIV positive cases in the state for the years 2006 and 2007.

In his written reply, Vyas said the total number of HIV cases for 2006 was 7450, while for 2007, it was 11,324, totalling to 18774 for the entire period.

He said the highest figures were from Ahmedabad at 3297 and 3633 for 2006 and 2007, followed by Surat (1224 and 2430). Dangs has the least cases of HIV-positive patients at only 28 individuals (9 and 19 for the two years).
