CM arrives late: Kids could not perform as events cut short

Pune, January 3 One hour of delay by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh to the Apang Kalyankari Sanstha at Wanavdi saw the enthusiastic students of the centre, disappointed when they could not put up some of the scheduled cultural programmes before the esteemed guest. The inaugural ceremony of the physiotherapy centre was to commence at 2.30 pm but the Chief Minister arrived at 3.30 pm. So among the nine cultural programmes scheduled, only four could be put up and some of the programmes had to be cut short because of shortage of time as the CM had to leave in an hour.

The children were made to sit at the venue for two hours. According to a trustee of the institution "these were children from the primary section and it was their first performance before a guest as generally it is the seniors who always get the opportunities to perform,'' he said.

Speaking to the Indian Express, some students said that with some of the programmes being cut short, they were not very happy with their performance. “Amhala vel khoop kami dele (we were given very less time),” said one student.

The CM, who is a trustee of Jeevan Vikas Pratisthan which caters to the hearing impaired in his hometown in Latur, was more focused on garnering funds for the institution. He called for religious trusts to open up their purse strings for this institution and help out the children achieve their goals. Having already donated Rs 10 lakh in his last visit, he said that the people should help out such institutions who were doing good work.

With members of the Shirdi devasthan present at the function he said "members of the Shirdi devasthan and Siddhi Vinayak trusts should open up talks for the same.'' He said that his government was doing all the needful to support the disabled sector. Deshmukh added that Centre's old age pension scheme which were specifically aimed at those Below Poverty Line was being reworked by the government as there were huge amount of discrepancies and that the State Government was working out a proposal for the same.

Congress MLA Balasaheb Shivarkar said that the government should consider revising the remuneration of the beneficiaries of Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana, to which the CM said that they were looking at various proposals.

The other chief guest for the function was managing director CITI corporation Ltd Aniruddha Deshpande who appreciated the spirit and determination of the students at the institution. The Apang Kalyankari Sevekari Sanstha award was presented to disabled activist WN Tungar as well as Rajesh Shah for their work in the disabled sector.
