Kolkata Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Monday congratulated a group of doctors and Group-D staff from the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital who were involved in a complex surgery to remove a 5.5-feet-long iron shaft from the body of an accident victim. The medicos met the CM at the Writers’ Buildings.

Sheikh Rezak Ali, a resident of Arambagh who had met with an accident last Thursday while driving a Tata Sumo that crashed with a lorry, was brought to the state-run CMCH in a critical condition. When doctors started operating on the patient, Ali still had the shaft penetrating his body and coming out from the other side and the operation took two hours to be successfully completed.

A team of 12 practitioners, including one Group-D staff and one nurse along with the superintendent of CMCH and other administrative representatives, visited the chief minister who had sent a letter to the hospital authorities congratulating them on their success and invited them to Writers’. The director of medical education and the state health secretary were also present on the occasion.

“We were called by the chief minister to Writers’ Buildings. He congratulated us for successfully conducting a difficult operation. He encouraged us and asked us to approach the government whenever the hospital needs anything,” said Dr Mrityunjay Mukhopadhyay, a CMCH doctor who headed the team that performed the surgery. “We always keep doing our job, but our work is not recognised very often. This time around, it was,” he added.
