Lucknow, February 2 Chief Minister Mayawati shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday, seeking a ban on a book called Culture in Ancient India, which reportedly portrays Lord Ram and Sita in a bad light.

The book is a part of the Delhi University curriculum. “There have been protests in many parts of the state. I have written to the prime minister seeking an immediate ban on the book,” Mayawati said. She added her party was with the protestors. “But at the same time, I must mention that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands,” she said.

Meanwhile, regarding the FIR, which had named BJP national president Rajnath Singh, former leader of opposition Lalji Tandon and six others in the controversial CD case, Mayawati said: “Now it is for the Centre to decide whether to let off the BJP leaders or prosecute them. The UP Government has nothing to do with this case as it has already ordered a CBI probe.”

Chief Electoral Officer Anuj Bishnoi, on the orders of the Election Commission had lodged the FIR in April 2007.
