The transit camps were handed over to the MHADA by the revenue and forest department in 1979. Many people have been living in these transit camps for over two decades.
The residents of these 688 tenements which spread over 18,400-square metre land have been demanding to rehabilitate them in the same locality as the growing builder lobby eye this prime land in Mumbai. Over the last five years, residents were demanding rehabilitation as transit buildings are in a crumbling condition.
Political leaders like MP Milind Deora and MLA Annie Shekhar had supported the demand of the residents for rehabilitation in the Colaba and Cuffe Parade areas.
The state government has also assured residents whose buildings cannot be redeveloped due to restrictions of the development plan that they will be rehabilitated in the same locality.
