Chandigarh Bravo!
The city saw an excellent example of the ‘fortitude’ of its brave police officers, when the cops ran for their lives during the anti-encroachment drive in Sector 38. Embarrassed at the conduct of his men, a top police officer said, “I think the time has come for us to constitute a special platoon that not only controls the mob, but also bashes up the policemen who flee from the spot at the slightest danger.”

Slumdog
The movie, Slumdog Millionaire, has polarised the views in the country. While there are some who are angered that this movie portrays India in poor light, a section of people acclaim its cinematic merits. But Chandigarh witnessed a protest of a different sort. It pertained to its title. Workers of the local unit of the BJP held a demonstration claiming the title of the movie was an offence to the slum dwellers. That no one from the “aggrieved section which they claimed to represent” was present at their demonstration was besides the point.

Chand and Fiza
The Chand and Fiza episode continues to capture the imagination of people. The most interesting has been the comment of Kuldip Bishnoi, the brother of what was once known as Chander Mohan. He has demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, for the government’s failure to trace Chander Mohan during the latest of his frequent disappearances. Amid all this drama, the house of Bhajan Lal in Sector 8, Panchkula bears a forlorn look. Surprisingly, the flag of Congress continues to flutter over his house. The torn flag of the Janhit Congress, formed by his son Kuldip Bishnoi, is inconspicuous. Bhajan Lal had resigned from the Congress to join Kuldip, whereas Chander Mohan who had stayed as Deputy Chief Minister, was sacked from the party after his tumultuous marriage to Fiza.

Chair
Who wants to give up his office chair, especially if it’s high-priced, well-cushioned and all done up with soft leather upholstery. For some, it’s a delight, but for this Punjab bureaucrat, it’s not so much a pleasure. Newly-appointed Public Relations Director Gagandeep Brar, who is an integral part of the CMO, decided to do away with his luxurious office chair. Instead, he preferred to sit on an ordinary wooden chair. The wooden chair is now adding to his comfort. Well, he prefers it this way, at least for now.

Good Samaritan
A girl got injured in a road accident near Matka Chowk last week. As usual, there were numerous curious onlookers and it took a young girl to stop and reach the injured lying on the roadside. She helped her into the back seat of her car and started for hospital. Meanwhile, the police arrived and without even assessing the situation started noting down the registration number of the car and asked the driver for his licence. It took the young Samaritan a great effort to explain to our ‘duty-bound’ cops that the woman was in need of urgent medical help, despite the first-aid, which she had administered herself as she was a trained doctor. But the cops would have none of it and allowed them to go only after the fulfillment all their ‘responsibilities’.
