Chandigarh Bitter half
“It is easier to win the respect and acclaim of your peers than winning the approval and appreciation of your better half,” said SS Channy, Principal Secretary, Industries, Punjab. Channy, who was speaking at a function organised to felicitate businesses which had excelled on the parameters of productivity and efficiency, said while wives do offer all the emotional support, most of the times, they are unaware of the true nature of hard work that their husbands were putting in. He felt it was necessary that at all these felicitiation functions, the better halves were invited along with those being honoured.

Help yourselves
How would you feel if the police express their inability to provide a secure environment and suggest its citizens to hire private security guards instead? Well, the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam offered a suggestion on similar lines. In a recent meeting, when one of the top officials of the department was asked to explain the increasing unscheduled powercuts in the state, he went on to suggest that people should get invertors installed in their homes as the power situation was only going to get worse in the days to come.

Hidden admirers
Now the Chautalas might have undertaken an odyssey on foot but they had their moments of embarrassment. At a particular location, a helicopter was spotted showering flowers over the congregation. When the local scribes asked Ajay Chautala about the chopper, he quickly said, “I don’t know, who is this. This certainly is a supporter of our party who is extending his support in this manner.” Even Shah Rukh Khan would have been proud of such enthusiastic and ‘anonymous admirers’.

Different words
Actions don’t seem to speak louder than our politicians’ words. Over the last several months, the leaders in Punjab have been assuring the representatives of various employees’ organisations that they would raise the case of increasing the retirement age of employees from 58 to 60. They said they would “do everything possible” to convince the Chief Minister about the merits of the case. However, in the latest Cabinet meeting, not even a word was mentioned about the issue to the Chief Minister by those who had made these promises.

New venue
The BSP held a workers’ rally at Circus Ground, Sector 17, with hundreds of workers turning up for the event. However, the venue was called Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Nagar for the rally. It left many wondering about the intentions of the party leaders. One can only conjecture if associating the rally with the circus did not seem appropriate, even when elephants form a big part of any circus.
