Pune For about four months now, the Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) has been unable to commission the CNG pump at Shivajinagar because of a break in the pipeline over a 1.7 km stretch near the College of Military Engineering (CME) boundary wall. On Tuesday, Defence Minister A K Antony approved the removal and shifting of this wall, among 15 other decisions.

As reported by The Indian Express on Thursday, this shifting of the 14-year-old boundary wall will benefit PCMC road widening project. It will also help MNGL complete the pipeline work, to ensure smooth supply of CNG.

“We have got the in-principal approval from the Defence Ministry, we should get the written order for shifting the wall in 15 days,” said Asheesh Sharma, Commissioner of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

For MNGL, this will mean they will finally be able to commission the pump at the Shivajinagar bus depot that has been lying idle for four months after it was built. “We will also be able to establish at least two stations along the pipeline route,” said an MNGL official.

The company will also be free to explore piped natural gas for potentially 3,500 customers in Pimpri-Chinchwad, after the pipeline materialises. This will happen only after the PCMC completes its road-widening project.

“The potential for piped gas is enormous in the city. However, as the pipeline work was incomplete we could not take our plans ahead,” said an MNGL official.
