Speaking at the 3rd North and North East Power summit in the city today, Chairman of CIL Partha S Bhattacharjee said that in the 10th Plan period, the production of coal was 360 million tons and in the 11th plan period it was supposed to be 521 million tons. He said at least 17 projects, which have about 101 million tons of coal reserves, cannot be explored due to delay in forest clearance. Bhattacharjee said despite the problem, the production of coal will be augmented from other projects and by the end of the 11th plan the company will produce 486 million tons of coal. He said in most cases the coal blocks are identified near forests and ideally it should take 300 days for a forest clearance but in most of the projects it takes five to six years to get the same.
