“We cannot issue a direction to the state government to raise the age of superannuation, but we recommend them to consider this aspect of the matter sympathetically and consider increase of the age of superannuation to 62 years,” the verdict said.
The case in mention was filed in 2004 by Benoy Bhusan Chakraborty, a teacher of Goenka College of Commerce and Businees Administration and the then secretary of teacher’s association.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Chakraborty said: “The Centre has issued two orders — one in 1998 to increase the age of retirement to 62 years, and another in December 2008 to increase the age up to 65 years.” The association has sent a copy of the court order to the state government.
A state official, however, maintained: “The state government is of the opinion that by keeping the age of retirement at 60, more fresh talent can be brought into the field of education.” While Bengal puts the retirement age for teachers at 60 years, with a provision for re-employment of five years, some states have 65 as the retirement age with additional re-employment of five years.
