This was announced by state finance minister Asim Dasgupta at the 37th annual general conference of West Bengal Governmental College Teachers Association held at Presidency College on Sunday.
“We are also happy to announce that 331 posts of teachers have been sanctioned for UG and PG courses in government colleges,” Dasgupta said. However, he did not specify a timeframe. The Chaddha Committee, which was formed in 2005 by the UGC, submitted its recommendation in September last year for increasing the salary of teachers in colleges and universities across the country. The panel had also favoured additional allowances for college and university teachers, besides raising the retirement age to 65. Teachers welcomed the decision. “We welcome the government’s decision. It has been long overdue. However, we will organise a rally in front of Calcutta University on January 28 to demand the early implementation of the report,” Tarun Patra, general secretary, West Bengal College and University Teachers Association, said at the conference.
