It will act as a single interface for six different systems which include critical place public surveillance, garbage vehicle and octroi vehicle management, red signal violation detection, area traffic control, passenger information and speed limit violation detection.

“Within a month’s time, the initial operations of this control room will begin, as almost 85 per cent of the hardware has been installed. As many as 22 screens and 20 desktops are in place,” said Shrinivas Bonala, additional city engineer (traffic) of PMC.

The Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (Keltron) is looking after the technical aspects of the ITS and its control room, which will maintain it for the next five years before handing it over to the PMC. Tulip Pvt Ltd is providing the optic fibre connectivity to the control room from all the cameras placed at various locations across the city. There will be a total of 170 cameras in the city.

“The cost of the project is Rs 17 crore, which entails the construction of this control room. The aim is to keep an eye on the whole traffic and transport scenario of the city from a centralised place. A tripartite agreement will come into effect amongst PMC, police and a private agency,” said Mangesh Dighe, junior engineer (traffic) of PMC.

“Apart from monitoring the traffic, the system can also be used for monitoring law and order and situations like flood and convoy movement of a VIP,” Dighe said.
