Kolkata The state government has sent one of the three companies of its armed police — who received commando training from the Punjab Police at Patiala — to Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore.

The force will join the Midnapore Police Lines on Saturday, said Vivek Sahai, IG, State Armed Police.

The move is meant to fill the vacuum in the security set-up created by the withdrawal of six BSF companies from Lalgarh and Jhargram.

The state police have decided to press into service a specialised force of 300 commandoes. Of them, 100 commandos will be sent to West Midnapore.

The highly trained outfit has been likened to the “Greyhound” of Andhra Pradesh Police.

On Friday, the Maoists, meanwhile, gunned down two villagers in Manikpara in Jhargram. After holding a Kangaroo court late on Thursday night, Khandan Mehfez Ali alias Mintu Ali (53) and Nirmal Nayek (28) were shot. Their bullet-ridden bodies were spotted in front of the Murabani Primary School in Mankipara.

A few posters found near the bodies stated that they were being punished for working as police informers.

“Mintu was a CPM worker in his early life,” said Mrigen Maity, the TMC district president. In 2003, he quit the party and contested the panchayat election as an Independent. In 2008, he contested as an Independent but was defeated again. “He was a supporter of TMC,” Maity said. “We could not understand why he was killed. We went to the Jhargarm police and asked them to investigate the matter.”

A police officer said Nirmal Nayak used to work in the household of Mintu Ali and he was not attached to any political party. Manoj Verma, SP, West Midnapore, said the bodies have been sent for post mortem.
