Ahmedabad In A significant move to optimise the Value Added Tax (VAT) revenues and modernise the tax administration system in Gujarat, the Commissionerate of Commercial Taxes (CCT) has implemented the VAT Information System (VATIS).

One of the most significant G2B (government to business)

e-governance initiative by the state government, it is aimed at cost effectiveness, revenue projection, effectiveness in tax administration, transparency in operation, widening of the tax net, controlling tax evasion and ensuring higher compliance levels.

Officials said that VATIS has other benefits as well. The tax department is able to establish an integrated view across taxes, measure employees’ performance and smoothen ‘document management’ and ‘file tracking system’.

For citizens, it means reduction in touch points, location

independence, 24x7 availability, data reliability, and quick remittance of refund and e-communication with the department for queries.

According to the CCT, the major achievement of VATIS has been the sustained improvements in VAT revenue collections.

Over 200 types of MIS reports have been made available to

the administrators for decision support.

The profiles of high tax paying dealers have also been made available through the portal, and over 40,000 use the e-return facility on a monthly basis.

Other major achievements include the VISIT project, which is a unique instant invoice matching for checking Input Tax Credit, and the MARG project for online submission of statutory forms with barcode receipts to establish green channel at all check posts.

P K Pujari, the Commissioner of Commercial Taxes in Gujarat, was unavailable for comments.
