Pune A police complaint has been lodged against the Survey of India (SOI) with the Yerawada police station on Tuesday for cutting over 25 fully grown trees in its campus on Alandi Road, Vishrantwadi to make way for a road.

According to the complainant Onkar Vahikar, an unidentified caller informed him of ‘heavy tree cutting activity’ along the Alandi road Regional Transport Office and Yerawada IT Park.

“Trying to locate the spot, my father Deepak Vahikar and me went along the road and jumped off the compound wall seeing the trees cut. It was later that we learnt that the land belonged to SOI,” Onkar said.

“When we approached one of the senior office bearers of SOI asking if they got permission from the garden department of Pune Municipal Corporation, he rudely replied that he did not require the permission,” Onkar added.

After calling the PMC, he filed a complaint with the Yerawada Police Station asking to not just penalise SOI, but also take due action against the illegal tree cut.

A team from the garden department rushed to the spot and surveyed the place where trees were cut.

Speaking to The Indian Express, A D Ghorpade, garden superintendent said that SOI had not taken permission from the PMC to cut trees. “We shall carry out a panch nama of the trees on Wednesday and issue notice to SOI,” he said. The SOI officials, however, were not available for comment.

Save tree of residential areas by Sudheer on 27 Feb 2009

I would like to add this to our BBMP that global warming has been adding for 2% year by year and the temperature is raising day by day. So BBMP has to take some measures to save the tree in residential areas where the trees have been cut almost regularly with or without the permissions. These trees were earlier planted by BBMP only but after planting the maintenance should be taken care. The people near residents fear for the insects on the trees and start cutting it. That should be avoided and the trees should be given numbers for tracking
