Digvijay Singh, the state in-charge of the party, said: “Azamgarh is a secular place. Some of its youths have been misguided, but we cannot blame the entire community for the acts of a few.” He even went on to apologise for the demolition of the Babri Masjid. “Certainly a mistake was committed as we trusted the affidavit of the party which was not trustworthy. We apologise for this,” said Singh.
Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congress state president, said: “Caste and communal politics have divided the nation. Thus, we need to recognise the culprits. Parties like the Bahujan Samaj Party are teaming up with communal forces like the Bharatiya Janata Party.”
She added, “We should be careful of their dangerous intentions.”
Over 10,000 people attended the rally, addressed by senior Congress leaders.
Another harmony rally will be organised in Meerut on December 22.
Fatehpur Sikri: Raj Babbar to contest on a Congress ticket
Kanpur: Even as the Congress and the Samajwadi Party are yet to agree on seat-sharing for the Parliament elections, MP Raj Babbar has said he would contest the polls from Fatehpur Sikri seat on a Congress ticket.
Addressing mediapersons on Saturday, he said, “I have met senior Congress leaders and asked for a ticket from Fatehpur Sikri constituency.” Regarding the differences between the two parties over who will contest from the Fatehpur Sikri and Kaiserganj seats, he said the issue would be decided by the party stalwarts. He, however, added: “Considering the assurance given by Congress leaders, I am confident of getting the ticket.”
