Chandigarh A group of Congress MPs and MLAs met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urging him to set up a premier healthcare institute like AIIMS in Sangrur district in the wake of inadequate healthcare facilities and high incidents of cancer in the area.

Sangrur MP Vijay Inder Singh said:“There will be complete synergy in the development initiatives if the government sanctions a rural university, which could aim to provide higher education to people living in rural areas and run specialised academic programmes in rural development and rural economics.” Citing lack of employment in Sangrur, he requested the PM to ensure that a Central PSU invests in a manufacturing unit in this area. “The Sangrur constituency is predominantly agricultural and has seen no industrial development of any significance in the recent past,” he added. The MP also urged the PM to waive the matching grant of the state government required to construct railway bridges in the state.
