Days after former MP Gurcharan Singh Galib expressed willingness to contest from Ludhiana in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, a section of Congress leaders have begun raising voices in favour of the AICC spokesperson Manish Tewari. The Congress has already given strong signals in favour of Tewari as its candidate from Ludhiana.
On Thursday, Congress leaders including former district congress committee (Urban) president Krishan Kumar Bawa, former DCC (Rural) president Gurdev Singh Lapran and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) member Pawan Dewan demanded Galib’s expulsion from the party.
Addressing a press conference, the leaders accused Galib of opposing the party’s candidates and said he wanted to remain a part of the Congress only when he was given a ticket to contest.
Bawa, Lapran and Dewan said in his political career spanning 40 years, Galib had first opposed Congress candidate Capt Nahar Singh in 1972, Jagroop Singh Gaggra in
the 1977 and 1980 Assembly elections.
Later, he opposed other candidates like Bibi Amarjit Kaur Aligarh in 1985, Darshan Singh Brar in 1992 and Bibi Jaswant Kaur in 1996, the leaders said.
They also accused Galib of working against Manish Tewari in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.
On Tuesday, Galib had said that if he was denied a party ticket, he would either contest as an Independent or on a SAD ticket.
