Kolkata Within a week of writing to the Speaker of the state Assembly, Hashim Abdul Halim, to cancel the membership of two rebel Congress MLAs, the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Manas Bhuniya on Thursday again sought the removal of Sudip Bandopadhyay from the post of chairman of the standing committee on commerce and industries, industrial reconstruction and public enterprises.

“He is heading the committee as a Congress MLA. We have requested the Speaker to remove him and nominate some senior Congress MLA as the chairman,” said Bhuniya. He said once the Speaker gives his consent, the CLP will forward the name of the party MLA for the job.

Bhuniya also batted for Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and criticised the government for its refusal to provide security to the MP on her recent visit to Lalgarh.

Banerjee was not provided with police escort on her visit to the strife-torn region on Wednesday. The state administration refused to provide her security insisting that the situation there was not conducive for any political activity.

“She is not a leader of our party but leader of the main Opposition. We would like to hear from Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who is in charge of the Home department, why the administration refused to provide her with the necessary police protection,” he said.

Lalgarh tense; Central team coming
Three districts of West Bengal on Thursday observed a bandh for the second day as part of a call given by the Maoists in protest against the death of three tribals on Monday during a clash with the CPM cadres.

Meanwhile, a seven-member team of the Union government will visit the three tribal-dominated districts of Bankura, Purulia and Birbhum on February 7 to review the implementation of Central government-funded schemes meant for tribals. West Midnapore district magistrate Narayan Swarup Nigam said, “We want to resolve the stalemate through dialogue. The Central team is scheduled to visit Lalgarh. I hope that normalcy will return within the next two days.”
