Kolkata Sunday’s defeat in Bishnupur West bypoll is the second setback for the Left Front after it suffered double reverses in assembly by-polls in Nandigram and Sujapur held in December and January.

The party, however, put up a brave front.

“It’s true that we could not reach people. But we believe it will have no effect on the Lok sabha polls,” said Biman Bose, CPM state committee secretary.

The by-poll in the constituency in South 24-Parganas district was necessitated by the death of CPM’s sitting legislator Rathin Sarkar.

The Congress also hailed the victory. “We are happy that the TMC candidate has won. But we too have contribution to the victory,” said Union External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee who also happens to be WBPCC president, at the party office.

Significantly, the Congress had declared that they would not field any candidate from South Kolkata constituency, where Mamata Banerjee contests the election from for Lok Sabha.

It also proved wrong CPM calculations that it would be able to win back support of the people who had voted against them in the panchayat election in South 24-Parganas in May, 2008, when the Trinamool for had wrested control of the Zilla Parishad for the first time.
