Pune The differences within the city unit of Congress has deepened further with a section of party seeking removal of Abhay Chhajed from the post of the party chief alleging that he was encouraging factionalism by working in favour of sitting MP Suresh Kalmadi.

City Congress general secretary Ramesh Pawale, a staunch supporter of MLC Mohan Joshi from the anti-Kalmadi camp, had a meeting of party workers where .

“The way city unit chief advocated the candidature for Kalmadi was against the tradition followed by the Congress. Chhajed openly spoke in favour of the sitting MP despite holding the coveted post that represents the entire party and not any individual,” party leaders said at the meeting.

The Congress workers have expressed their opinion in front of party observers, but the city Congress chief termed it as show of strength, they said while writing a letter to state Congress chief Manikrao Thakare to remove Chhajed from the post.

The city Congress chief has also made a false claim that key organisations of party have extended their support to Kalmadi, they said.

The loyal party workers are against the way activities of party are being carried out, they said. “It is under the leadership of Kalmadi and Chhajed that the party lost in the elections of Pune Municipal Corporation. This indicates that the public opinion is not in their favour.”
