Lucknow/Varanasi, January 31 The Congress has accused Chief Minister Mayawati of protecting the BJP in the controversial CD issue, after the state recommended a CBI probe into the episode.

AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh said there was no need for a fresh probe into the case. “As the probe was complete, the state should have taken action in the matter. Mansha saf hai wo talna chahti hain,” he said.

Elsewhere, the Samajwadi Party also attacked the chief minister over the issue, with leader Amar Singh dubbing Maya’s recommendation for a CBI probe against BJP president Rajnath Singh as a game of “rakhi and hand cuff”.

“Its nothing but political farce. If Mayawati is so sincere about secularism, why did she obliquely back Narendra Modi during the 2002 Gujarat elections? She even formed governments with the same BJP in UP in the past,” Singh said on Thursday. “Mayawati, who once tied a rakhi on BJP leader Lalji Tandon’s hand, is playing a game of rakhi and hathkadi,” he said.

The SP leader might appear to be on the same side as the Congress as far as the CD issue is concerned, but when asked about the growing proximity between his party and the Congress, Singh said: “I went to Congress leaders in New Delhi seeking support against the Sacchi Ramayana but they didn’t back me. Does that suggest any closeness between the two parties?”

Regarding Maya’s demand for a special package, Digvijay Singh said it was not proper for the state to demand such a package.

“The Centre has already allotted enough funds to UP,” he added. The Centre has sent a team to the Bundelkhand region to assess the situation.

Singh also said the chief minister must show evidence regarding the threat to her life from the Congress party. “These are serious allegations. She should produce evidence before the Prime Minister or the Union home minister, in support of her statement.”

Meanwhile, UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi said the party would begin its “Hisab Do Abhiyan” across the state in order to expose the poor implementation of the central government’s various schemes.

She also said party workers would use RTI to coll-ect information about centrally-sponsored schemes and programmes in the state.
