Consumers need not worry in times of recession: experts

Chandigarh “In the tough times of global financial crisis, the consumers don’t need to worry. India is not the epicentre of the crisis. The low inflation and the reducing prices will trigger the economic growth in the country,” said Sri Ram Khanna, managing editor and senior vice chairman of Consumers Voice, a Delhi-based organisation, at a seminar on the ‘Effect of recession on consumers’ at Panjab University (PU) on Sunday. The seminar was organised by the Consumer Coordination Council, New Delhi and Consumers Association Chandigarh at Punjab University.

Former MP of Lok Sabha, Rajkot and the chairperson of consumer coordination council, Ramban Mavani said, “Consumers need to pose a check on school and college going children who indulge in tobacco, beedi and alcohol.”

Coordinator of the seminar S K Khosla while reading his paper on ‘Global Financial Crisis — Impact on Employment’ said that there has been large scale unemployment because of the financial crises. He said that about

71 diamond polishers have committed suicide in Gujarat over the last few months following their lay offs.

Professor Manjit Singh of Sociology at PU highlighted the need of an accountable government. Former Professor of University Business School of Panjab University, Dr P P Arya, traced the history of the 1930 meltdown, which continued for five years.

Professor at the University Business School, Panjab University, Chandigarh Dr A K Vashishat was also present.
