Pune Controversy reared its ugly head in the Late Shri Surendra Anand football tournament match between Gadhinglaj United and New Globe (Kamthi) when a debatable decision from the referee Louis Fernandes resulted in Gadhinglaj United forfeiting the game in the 45th minute.

New Globe started the game well and had the better of the exchanges in the first half. However, Gadhinglaj United got back in the game and launched a few attacks of their own. Both defences could not be broken and the half ended goalless. New Globe started the second half with a bang and scored in the very first minute through Sachin Athar. Gadhinglaj responded well and were putting pressure on the opposition goal. They equalized through Pramod Raut in the 43rd minute. While they were celebrating this goal, the referee blew the starting whistle and New Globe player Naved Athar scored a direct goal from the kick-off.

It was at this stage that the controversy began. Most of the Gadhinglaj players including the keeper were out of position and hence raised a protest against the referee. The referee stood by his decision after which the players decided to walk out.

“Some of our players were in their half when the referee blew the whistle. As per the rules, the referee should have restarted the game. We are very disappointed with the refereeing. There is absolutely no co-ordination with the referees and his assistants. Even the first goal that they (New Globe) scored was offside," said Gadhinglaj United coach, Deepak Kuppannvar. When the referee was asked to justify his decision, he declined to comment and said he 'did not want to be interrupted.' The match commissioner AF Pinto said, "Once the referee blows his whistle the payers have to be ready. All of the Gadhinglaj players were in their half and that is all that matters. The referee made the right decision.”
