Shewale, a constable attached to the Vikhroli police station, was patrolling the Ganesh Marg area along with colleague Arun Sonawane when he spotted the accused, Mangesh Bhimrao Kamble. Kamble has several cases of thefts and assault registered against him at various police stations.
“When we spotted Kamble early on Monday, we chased him and I jumped off my bike to grab him. He suddenly bit my right hand which was next to his mouth to loosen my grip. When I did not let him go, he continued to bite me for 2-3 minutes. We have been looking for him for the last couple of weeks therefore I was determined to arrest him and put him behind the bars. I held on and Sonawane rushed to my side and tied him with a chain,” said Shewale who went to the hospital only after dragging Kamble to the police station.
“Though I didn’t require any stitches, my hand bears Kamble’s teeth marks,” added Shewale, who turned up for night duty in the evening.
Police Inspector R G Mhatre of the Vikhroli police station said that Kamble began as a juvenile offender who was arrested in cases related to chain snatching, assaults and criminal intimidation. “Last month, we booked him for abducting and raping a 17-year-old girl from Ramabai Nagar. A few days later, a local politician complained that Kamble was seen with a girl on the terrace of his house. Angered by the complaint, Kamble had broken the window panes of the complainant’s house. He was wanted in both the above crimes. He has now also been booked for preventing a public servant from discharging his duty,” said Mhatre.
