Chandigarh A constable, deputed at the Police Lines, has been booked on charges of outraging a woman’s modesty in Sector 11 market on Saturday.

Varinder, resident of Dadumajra colony, tried to molest a woman at 3.30 pm. He was in an inebriated condition at the time of the incident.

Police said they have received a formal complaint from the victim, living as a paying guest in Sector 11. “We immediately apprehended the constable, who was in an inebriated condition and took him for a medical examination. His medical reports confirmed he was under the influence of liquor,” said Inspector Sukhbir Rana, Station House Officer, Sector 11 police station.

Sources said the accused was in the uniform and consuming liquor near a taxi stand in the Sector 11 market.

The complainant told the police she had gone to the market with her friends to shop. “We saw the policeman following us. Out of nowhere, he came in front to us and tried to hold my hand. When I resisted, he tried to molest me. I then shouted for help,” she said in her complaint.

Eyewitnesses later informed the police, who took the accused to the Sector 11 police station. An officer later told Newsline: “Strict action would be taken against the accused who has humiliated the force by committing such an act.”
